Our training events
We have already held a number of training events both in person and live online. We are looking to add further options to our training offer and welcome your ideas on areas that we could develop to training@vmd.gov.uk.
Veterinary Dispensary Manager Course
Accredited by Vetpol and VetSkill Accredited for 5 hours of CPD
This course is delivered by the VMD's Inspection Team. It outlines principles and protocols required for the effective and responsible management of the veterinary dispensary, including prescribing, supplying, dispensing, sourcing and storing, and processes to minimise dispensing errors.
This course is suited to Veterinary Dispensary Managers, Ambulatory Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Nurses, SQPs working in or looking to move into a veterinary dispensary role, Veterinary Pharmacists or Practice Managers who oversee veterinary dispensaries.
Introduction to Veterinary Wholesale Qualified Person
This course introduces the role and responsibilities of the Wholesale Qualified Person (WQP).
It is suited to those looking to become a WQP, existing WQPs wishing to refresh their understanding, and for businesses looking to become wholesale dealers of veterinary medicines.

This module introduces you to the roles and responsibilities of the VMD and the core legislation involving medicines. Including:
- Who are the VMD?
- Why do we have the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR)
- Why is it important to understand the legislation?

Responsible and legal use of medicines
This module covers how to safely and legally store, and use medicines within the practice. Including:
- How you should prescribe, supply and dispense medicines
- Why it’s important to record and store medicines correctly
- How to use the Prescribing Cascade
- How to use, store and dispose of Controlled Drugs safely.
- An introduction to anthelmintic resistance
- Why a collaborative approach is required for responsible antimicrobial use

Dispensary management
This module includes all the need-to-know facts about dispensary management within the practice. Including:
- How to run your dispensary safely and efficiently
- How to reduce waste in the dispensary and be more sustainable
- Who is a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) and what is their role?

QI in the dispensary: Preventing errors
This module discusses errors that can occur in the dispensary, and the systems that can be put in place to help prevent them. Including:
- How to use Quality Improvement (QI) successfully in the dispensary
